spam defined

spam has been defined three ways, simply that which is not wanted, Unsolicited Commercial Email and finally as Unsolicited Bulk Email. Well there is a fourth definition that spammers use, other than what they do but we aren't buying :-).

That which is not wanted [Doesn't work]

Does not really work and does not scale. What if you sign up for a list and then decide you don't want it. The list owner is not physic and so should not be made to read your mind as to what you want or do not want.

Unsolicited Commercial Email [UCE]

This is a good start but spammers tend to attempt to muddy the waters attempting to mislead the recipient as to what is or is not commercial and then the politician will want their frea speach at your expense and we can't forget the charitable solicitation, surely that can't be commercial. This leaves to much to chance.

Unsolicited Bulk Email [UBE]

This definition is favored by the Internet Service Industry because it offers them protections, but almost all members of the Internet Service Industry fail to understand this leaves the individual with no protections. You can't really blame them for wanting all that protection while offering the user nothing.

These definitions have failed to stop or even impede spam and any intelligent individual knows that to stop anything, you must first identify it and spam is no different. In this case these definitions are insufficient and so we would offer another.

Unsolicited Email Solicitations [UES]

This covers everything while offering protections for the sender if the email is solicited. Ye ole politician and the charities will have to find another way to express their frea speach.

These four definitions suit the needs of those defining the problem and are all so vague they are unusable. To find a solution to any problem the problem must first be identified. For this we must consider the needs of the recipient and forget the needs of the sender because the sender is the problem.

The standard definitions include the term "Unsolicited" in them and one requires spam to be sent in bulk and the other requires it to be of a commercial nature. These both fail to adequately protect the recipient because both definitions are provided by the Internet Service Provider and designed for the Service Provider's protection and not the recipient's protection. Further, the definitions UCE and UBE are at odds with each other.

Unsolicited Email Solicitations [UES] covers both bulk and commercial and "protected" solicitations. An individual or company's right to solicit you ends at your door; your modem is inside your home as is your telephone. This includes solicitations for God, politicians, services and/or products. While this is not a solution to spam this defines what spam is so a solution can then be found. Some may say this is too broad of a definition but it has to be all inclusive or it means nothing.

How do you prove the spam was sent in bulk? Does the definition of "commercial" violate the politician's God given right to send you spam? We don't differentiate between political solicitations and the solicitations of grandma selling here cookies.

spam is spam.
